You pray, and he doesn’t. The seat beside you on Sunday is empty, and the questions at the kitchen counter come to you.

He may never have believed, or he may have stopped, or he may simply not talk about it. Either way, you carry the faith in your house by yourself.
When You Pray Alone walks through fourteen of the places this shows: the drive home from a funeral, Sunday morning by yourself, the questions children ask, the prayer that is really an argument, the anger you bring to God about him. Each chapter closes with a prayer.
It holds to the title of its second chapter: he is not your project. It offers no sentence that will bring him to faith. It draws a careful line between ordinary difference in belief and coercion, and when it is the second, it tells you to get help from people qualified to give it.
Your place among God’s people is not half a place because your husband does not occupy the other half.
Your child has written your name beside the first blank and added, in careful uneven letters, “going to church.” The second blank waits beneath your husband’s name.
Bless what is mine to live; release what is his to answer.
Prayer and submission language must never be used to keep you in danger. If you are unsafe, seek specialist support and make plans with people qualified to help; direct confrontation or couples counseling may increase danger in coercive situations.
This is a devotional companion, not a substitute for pastoral care, licensed clinical care, legal guidance, or emergency help.
If you’re the only one at your table who prays, the start of an ordinary meal may be where it shows most. Out loud or silently. Before he picks up his fork, or after.
